People are always telling you to
Take time for yourself,
Fit your own oxygen mask first.
And it’s making you a little sick in the stomach just thinking about it. It’s actually making the problem worse.
Because then the guilt sets it…..”I need to do this slowing down thing but I can’t…..I know it’s best for me and for everyone but I can’t and now I’m failing even more than I was before!”
I’m about to give you the best news you’ve had all week (possibly ever!).
And I’m going to explain it in a bit of detail. I’m not just going to tell you what it is, I’m going to tell you why it is……..because that’s the way I roll. (I can’t help it, I have to tell you why! It’s in my DNA!).
But first you have to do something.
Breathe deeply 3 times.
Breathe right down into your lower belly. Three times.
What you just did then was turn off your fight or flight (sympathetic) nervous system. You told your beautifully designed body and brain that the lion was no longer chasing you, that the elephants have stopped stampeding, and that everything is OK now. You told your system that the danger has passed and to stop producing the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. You told your body that it’s safe.
I want you to understand that this little trick is the only one we have to fool our sympathetic nervous system – normally it just does things in our body without asking permission.
And it’s so simple. Breathe.
Because when we breathe deeply, filling our lungs completely, we can’t be running away or climbing trees or fighting. So our brain and our body thinks it’s safe.
And very few of us actually ever breathe properly, deeply, meaningfully…….
Having fewer stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline coursing through our veins is a very good thing. It can make a world of difference to our health, to our outlook on life and our longevity. Having fewer stress hormones gives those other feel good hormones and neurotransmitters a chance to have their say and to do what they are meant to do.
Bathing our systems in cortisol all day everyday is not good.
It’s really not good. Stop it!
So right now and at least 3 times a day every single day for the rest of your life, stop…..and breathe.
